[N8VEM: 19743] Possible updates to the N8VEM SBC V2 BOM

Yes, hi, new guy here. I'm going to be building the N8VEM SBC V2 as soon as
my order arrives from Jameco, which will take a whole week because
back-ordered connector. It has a 3 day lead time, but is far cheaper than
the alternative I found on Digikey ($35?!)

While ordering parts, I hit two issues while working off the BOM on the
wiki, and got solutions to both, so that someone could possibly update the
file.
1) C31 (22uF capacitor) is listed with Jameco part number 1946308. This is
not a valid part number on Jameco anymore. I found Jameco part number
545852 as a substitute, and Ed Snider said that it would suffice.
2) U10 (74LS243) is listed as, uh, "eBay" under Jameco, with nothing under
Digikey. I checked Digikey and found this IC as part number 296-11619-5-ND,
so no more need to eBay for this part!

Hope this helps you all out! And thank you for the awesome project, I can't
wait to put this together!

Hi Christopher,

Over last several years I became disappointed with Jameco, and shifted
almost all my components orders to Mouser. Many advantages there: great
selection, new components (and not ones that were on the shelves for
decades), nice packaging, most components are offered in quantities of one
(yes, even resistors).

Here is 74LS243 at Mouser (it is a bit expensive):
http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Texas-Instruments/SN74LS243N/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMs9F6aVvY09bpuMTsb1T9HYmMj0%252bIBkUuQ%3d
I believe you can substitute it for 74HCT243:
http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Texas-Instruments/CD74HCT243E/?qs=%2fha2pyFaduhrudr35ta0pVRgoswkKjY7QDZgRRWqxvY%3d

Mouser also has a selection of DIN 41612 connectors, some are cheaper
(usually meaning thinner or no gold plating).

Thanks,
Sergey

Hi Sergey,

Personally I prefer working with Digikey. When I placed my order, it was
shipped within 30 minutes and arrived two days later... with the cheapest
shipping via USPS! Now that's what I call super service.
I am a little salty with Mouser, though. It is not very clear when parts
are out of stock, and I had to wait 4 MONTHS for a RTC part! That, and I
had to jump through hoops with their legal department because I ordered a
65C02 and a 65C816... though Western Design Center told me on Twitter that
they fixed that.
Also, the 74LS243 is the same price on both Mouser and Digikey. At least it
beats eBay?

I have nevvvver had a problem with Mouser. Their web site clearly shows their inventory. If you order something that is not in stock it shows as backordered before you complete the order.

As far as delivery speed, that depends on how far you live from the Dallas area. I have placed orders at 7 PM and get them the next day. That is 95 percent of the time. I am a 5 hour ride up I-30. For me Digikey takes 5 days.

For new parts I shop in this order.

Avnet express
Mouser
Digkey ( most items are 5 to 10% more than Mouser)

I avoid Jameco!

A part like the 74LS243 are from an older family of part, most have been replaced by 74ALS family or 74HCT, 74AHCT parts. In most cases the newer parts can replace the older ones. Also DIP packages have long ago lost out in favor of surface mounted parts in commercial projects. Making them a bit harder to find at reduced price. This make it harder for our projects.

Again, In most cases, a 22uf/10v capacitor can be replace with a larger part. Like 47uf/16v. As long as it fits in the board. It's not critical in most cases unless it's used in a timing circuit.

I often use surface mounted .1uf/50v capacitor to replace the axial wire lead capacitors used on most of our projects. I mount them on the back of the boards. Their cheaper and easy to find, and for me they take less time to install.

Getting use to substitution of parts is just part of the hobby!

Gang,

Here is a source for the 74LS243.

Minimum order from this company is $50.

I discovered this vendor by using https://parts.io/
