[N8VEM: 17830] Questions about the N32202 PCBs

Hi Folks!

Where is the information of the N32202 PCBs? I noticed in the inventory
list that there are 88 of them, a pic comes with it and they are free? Are
they a pre-N8 design? What is the specifications? I might be interested in
one.

Hi Edward!

Thanks for the info, but I meant the N32202, not the PIC. :)

Hi Kip, I think you might be mistaken.

The N32202 is not a PCB it is a chip:

*Chips* 80C188-25 CPU8$4 WD37C65 FDC $8 *NS32202**88**Free w/PIC*

It is a Priority Interrupt Controller in the "Chips" section.

You get one free when you order an ECB PIC PCB

*ECB Boards* <snip>

*ECB PIC (68K Multifunction)*

$20

There was a board designated as P58767, which was the prototype N8. See:
http://n8vem-sbc.pbworks.com/w/page/42305548/About%20Board%20Identifiers%20N8-P58767%20and%20N8-2511%20and%20N8-2312

But has long since been replaced by the N8-2312.

Cheers!

Hi Everyone!

Oops! I didn’t even see “Chips” in bold letters. Sorry about that. Thank you everyone who chimed in. I’ll try to make sure it’s not staring me in the face next time. :) Take care my friends.

Hi John!

The 32000 series Microprocessors from National sound interesting. Thank you
for the information. I had no idea National had a chip like this. I
appreciate it. I'll have to peruse the datasheet one day.

The National Semiconductor 32000 series CPU was the third entry into the
serious microprocessor market.

1. Intel 8086 (16-bit)
2. Mororola 68000 (32-bit internal, 16-bit external bus)
3. NS 32000 (32-bit internal, 16-bit external bus)

There were 5 chips in the original chip set:

NS32016 CPU -- considered the "best micro-CPU on which to run Unix";
later, the NS32032, a 32-bit bus version.
NS32081 FPU
NS32082 MMU
NS32201 TCU -- timing control
NS32202 ICU -- interrupt control & timers

Marketing-wise, the 32000 was a disaster for National. It came out too
late; most manufacturers had already chosen to go with Intel or Motorola.

I just uploaded the chip data sheet to the ECB Multifunction Controller
folder on the Wiki.

P.S. I think all of the chip data sheets are on
http://www.datasheetarchive.com/

The N32202 is not a PCB it is a chip:Â

It is a Priority Interrupt Controller in the "Chips" section.Â

You get one free when you order an ECB PIC PCB

There was a board designated as P58767, which was the prototype N8. See:

But has long since been replaced by the N8-2312.

The 32000 series Microprocessors from National sound interesting.
As far I know, Atari at early stage were planning to use the 32016 in their
16-bit ST series, but due to availability (or pricing?) they switched to
68000 before finishing the design.

Best regards

That is interesting. I had never even heard of that processor, that I
remember anyway.

In later years I heard a rumor that the MMU gave National the fits.
I don't know if they ever ironed out all the glitches. The
follow-on CPU-MMU combination was better (NS32332/NS32382), and the
last integrated CPU-MMU chip was great (NS32532).
The National chip found its way into embedded designs, but never
gained acceptance as the primary CPU.
The instruction set is notable for its symmetry. It is a two
address machine, and each of the two addresses can run the gamut of
all the addressing modes: register, register indirect, direct
address, indexed address, stack relative, etc. It used a module
call mechanism similar to what appeared in the Motorola 68020 (and
later disappeared in the 68030 and follow-on's).

Back in the mid-80's I built an S-100 system using the NS32016
chip-set. It was fun to play with, although there was never any
significant software for the machine. Later I had a commercial
PC/AT co-processor card with an NS32532 + FPU which ran a port of
System V (Unix).
The n32202 is the pic chip for the ECB PIC (68k multifunction board) which is out of stock. There were a few boards a month or so ago - guess they got taken.

I meant to say one came with the board when you got the board. I think John C bought the lot as they were going end of life and donated them
