[N8VEM: 17936] SBC-188 V2 Questions

I'm working on finishing my SBC-188 V2, and I had a couple questions:

-I bought the supercapacitor for the RTC backup, but it seems like there
isn't enough room around the P6 header to actually fit it on the board.
From photos of the V1 board it looks like it did fit... What's the best
option here?

-What's the best way to bring-up the board for the first time?

Andrew

I've attached super-caps in a couple of different ways. On my SBC
v1, I installed 2 pins for the battery connector, then put a
super-cap on a connector which attaches to the two pins. It is a
0.1F cap, which folds back nicely against the connector.

With the round 0.22F cap, I had to bend the pins a bit to fit it in
on the SBC-188 v1. The v2 board is tighter, and may fit the 0.1F
cap easier. But to use the 0.22F cap, I suggest adding wires to the
cap leads, and mounting the cap so it rides above the DIPs. The cap
is wrapped in insulation, and the plastic of the DIPs sits high
enough that there is no problem of shorting leads.

Depending upon what backplane you may want to plug the board into,
there is always the fallback option of placing the cap on the bottom
of the board. I wouldn't recommend this except as a very last
resort.
Burn the BIOS and set your serial terminal for 9600bps. The first
thing the BIOS does is set up the CPU internal registers. The
second thing it does is establish communication (output) on the
serial port. The power-on-self-test of memory is not done until
serial output has occurred.
