Discussion:
[N8VEM: 17867] Color VDU , no video - help needed

Hi All

I hope that someone can help me with my problem.

I have build the CVDU Card , rev. 1.0-005 , made the mods as described in
docs. I have build the 10 pin to CGA cable and are using an old CRT
monitor which I normally use for my C-128.

For the rom image I have choosen one of the readybuilt ones -
N8VEM_diskio3+cvdu.rom.

When powering up the system - I get a lot of garbage on the CRT and then
after a second or so, a blinking cursor then nothing more happens on the
CRT.

On the tty term i see the normal bootup process, CVDU enabled and 64K ram
found - which is correct as I use 4464 IC's.

What can be wrong - did I forget anything ?

Best regards
Frank

What ROM image are you using? It sounds like the hardware is working ok
(that is the normal behavior)-- and the monitor should be fine (that is the
same type of monitor that I use).

I received the video converter today (Gonbus GBS8200) commonly used with
arcade systems to convert the CGA output to VGA. The specs are below. Of
course, it doesn¹t work. I¹m going to connect the CVDU to a TV VGA input (I
have two Samsung TVs) and see what I get. I¹m a little disappointed because
the specs are encouraging.

In connecting the ColorVDU to different monitors, do remember that EGA and
CGA require different timing parameters.

The following is copied from: Wilton, Richard, Programmer's Guide to PC
and PS/2 Video Systems, Microsoft Press, 1987. ISBN 1-55615-103-9.

Figure 2-7, p. 24:

mode dot clock (oscillator) hor. scan rate
vert. scan rate
EGA 640x350 16.257mhz 21850

EGA 720x350 16.257mhz 18432

CGA 640x200 14.318mhz 15750
60

VGA 720x400 28.322mhz 31500
70
VGA 640x480 25.175mhz 31500

Ideally, the ColorVDU would use VGA output, but the 8563 chip has a maximum
input frequency of 16mhz. This leads to the compromise on the 15-pin HD-DB
connector of EGA scan rates using 720x350 mode (9-bit characters). The
timing parameters are hard coded into the setup routines in the SBC-188
BIOS, and, I believe, the RomWBW BIOS.

To use the CGA output, changes the use of the ColorVDU entirely, both in
hardware and software. To achieve the exact IBM video timings, both the
oscillator can (h/w) and the CRTC timing parameters (s/w) need to be
changed.

Dan originally obtained his output using a CGA-to-VGA converter. His
earliest test programs are in the file, "CVDU Test Programs.zip," on the
Wiki. I would suggest contacting him directly on using CGA output from this
board.

If this output is indeed PC-style CGA, you will need a DAC, since PC-style
CGA is digital, and arcade-style CGA is analog.

Richard42, of commodore128.org, designed such a DAC, and I am selling them
at my cost, or you are also welcome to download the Eagle CAD files, and
make your own board.

See http://www.commodore128.org/index.php?topic=4040.0, for more

The board has several inputs, including arcade analog, YPbPr, and a standard
15-pin VGA-style connector. Supposedly it¹s auto-sensing on that connector.
I guess notÅ

I will try the C128 converter. Thanks.

Subject: Re: [N8VEM: 17915] Color VDU , no video - help needed
In connecting the ColorVDU to different monitors, do remember that EGA and
CGA require different timing parameters.
The following is copied from: Wilton, Richard, Programmer's Guide to PC and
PS/2 Video Systems, Microsoft Press, 1987. ISBN 1-55615-103-9.
mode dot clock (oscillator) hor. scan rate
vert. scan rate
EGA 640x350 16.257mhz 21850
60
EGA 720x350 16.257mhz 18432
50
CGA 640x200 14.318mhz 15750
60
VGA 720x400 28.322mhz 31500
70
VGA 640x480 25.175mhz 31500
60
Ideally, the ColorVDU would use VGA output, but the 8563 chip has a maximum
input frequency of 16mhz. This leads to the compromise on the 15-pin HD-DB
connector of EGA scan rates using 720x350 mode (9-bit characters). The timing
parameters are hard coded into the setup routines in the SBC-188 BIOS, and, I
believe, the RomWBW BIOS.
To use the CGA output, changes the use of the ColorVDU entirely, both in
hardware and software. To achieve the exact IBM video timings, both the
oscillator can (h/w) and the CRTC timing parameters (s/w) need to be changed.
Dan originally obtained his output using a CGA-to-VGA converter. His
earliest test programs are in the file, "CVDU Test Programs.zip," on the Wiki.
I would suggest contacting him directly on using CGA output from this board.

What ROM image are you using?  It sounds like the hardware is working ok
(that is the normal behavior)-- and the monitor should be fine (that is the
same type of monitor that I use).

Hi All
I hope that someone can help me with my problem.
Frank

Hi Frank,

It may be working fine. Try sending some text to it using PIP. After you
boot to ROM, do something like:

B> PIP CRT:=FLASH.MAN

This should send the text of the file FLASH.MAN to the screen.

If this works, you can try STAT CON:=CRT: to switch the entire console over
to the color VDU.

Thanks,

Wayne

Hi Again

I got a Picture on the CRT and PS2 kayb. is working too, but there is some
noise in the Picture - and also the CPU is not stable , but only when it is
connected in the backplane - having the CPU board flat on the table
connected to PSU , it is stable , but when connected to the backplane (8
connector backplane) it is unstable.

Wondered if my PSU is not powerfull enough for 2 or more boards ? how much
power is the different boards drawing ?

Hi Wayne

Thanks a lot for Your help - it's great :-)

The rom imagefile is one of the readymade N8VEM_diskio3+cvdu.rom ,
HBIOS v.2.5.4 Build 20 , 01-mar-2014. And Yes it is SBC v2 CPU board.

JP2 was open - I tried to short it , no difference at all. All jumpers are
set as default in the document "Building the N8VEM for the Total Beginner
v1.1" - just not JP2. it was left open.

instability - it sometimes gives an "fatal error" or won't boot at first ,
but after pressing reset button it boots - but sometimes I need to power
off and then on Again to get it to boot - this happens only when it is
seated in the backplane - not when it is out of the backplane.

The noise on the CRT looks like "White noise" when there is no Picture ,
and after redirect so I get a Picture - it looks like a small cursor
blinking under each character. The noise change in intesity - depending on
how the powercable is laying - close to other cables or far from.

All characters are drawn completely correct - no missing dots.

I use an old PC PSU - from an old Novell pc. 175 Watt.

Hi Frank,

Just checked and my pre-built ROM that you are using is not properly
configured to support the JP2 setting. It is trivial to fix and post an
updated distribution which I will do this weekend.

I'm afraid the instability sounds like something beyond my EE knowledge.
Maybe others can help with that...

Thanks,

In case you want to try it, I just posted RomWBW v2.5.5 on the Wiki. The
ONLY changes were configuration updates to the VDU, and CVDU builds so that
they now respect the JP2 jumper. If JP2 is open, you will boot directly to
the CRT. If JP2 is shorted, you will boot to UART and can issue commands
to direct I/O to the CRT (such as STAT CON:=CRT:).
Thanks,

Hi Wayne

You have helped me before with the N8VEM video controller, so now I hope
You can help me with another task / problem that I have.

This time it is not the N8VEM, but CP/M , I have an old LYNX 128K computer

3.0 (CP/M Plus).

My problem is that I never tried this , so where do I start and what do I
have to do ?

Hi Frank,

Sorry for the slow response -- have been very busy lately.

It sounds like you want to adapt CP/M 3 to your Lynx hardware. I don't
really have any special guidance to give you other than point you to the
CP/M 3 manuals and distribution. I would suggest browsing the "The
Unofficial CP/M Web Site" at http://www.cpm.z80.de/. You will find CP/M
3.0 manuals, source code, and binary distributions there. You probably
want to start with the CP/M 3 System Guide which describes how to bring
CP/M 3 up on a new system. You will also find a CP/M 3 distribution which
will run CP/M 3 on an existing CP/M 2 computer which may be useful to you.

Thanks,

Wayne

Hi Frank,

If I constructed the ROM and assuming you are using SBC v2 as the CPU board, then JP2 on the CPU board should control whether the console starts on the serial port or the VDU. JP2 shorted means serial port. JP2 open means VDU startup. Check that and post your results.

Thanks,

Wayne
