Kemet $0.017 at 1000 parts ($17.00) , last time I got 1000 parts for $0.009

These are 1206 parts X7R .1uf 50v 10%, they do fit over the pads common on
our boards.. Not perfect, but good enough! Maybe we should modified the
pads to make it fit both parts on future boards?

0805 and smaller parts are a bit cheaper, larger that 1206 cost a bit more
as the industry has move away from these larger parts.

common in cell phone today is 0201 to 01005 parts!!!
I use1206 parts, they fit fine over the .2in spacing used on our boards

Interesting idea. I wonder (out loud) if changing all bypass caps to
something like 2012 or larger and mounting them on the back would free up
additional top-side space in the denser boards?
I remember long ago that some people used IC sockets with a bypass cap
mounted in the center of the socket. I think they still make them, but they
probably cost more than the sum of a regular socket and cap.
For parts ordering, I usually use Digi-Key or Jameco; sometimes Mouser but
only if the others don’t have it. I also buy odder parts from “acpsurplus”
or “huskerfan40214” on eBay. I usually buy ahead and in bulk for projects
to I try to take advantage of volume discounts. The downside is that I have
a large box of tubes of chips. When a new project comes up, I “go to the
parts cage” and pull parts, then do a fill-in order if needed. If I’m
running low, I’ll order in quantity and stock it. For the most part, I’m
only doing refill orders at this point — it’s rare that I don’t have a part
in-stock. I keep an Excel spreadsheet of my inventory so I know where I am
with stuff.

SMT bypass caps -- a very novel idea ... at least for me. Need to try
it! What (physical) size?
...
I often use surface mounted .1uf/50v capacitor to replace the axial wire
lead capacitors used on most of our projects. I mount them on the back of
the boards. Their cheaper and easy to find, and for me they take less time
to install.
Getting use to substitution of parts is just part of the hobby!

I have nevvvver had a problem with Mouser. Their web site clearly shows
their inventory. If you order something that is not in stock it shows as
backordered before you complete the order.
As far as delivery speed, that depends on how far you live from the
Dallas area. I have placed orders at 7 PM and get them the next day. That
is 95 percent of the time. I am a 5 hour ride up I-30. For me Digikey
takes 5 days.

Wow uh, I did not intend to create a holy war about suppliers ._.
The only reason I used Jameco is because the BOM listed part numbers for
their store. Maybe someone should redo the list with Mouser instead, since
that seems to be everyone's favorite?

I think there is a diversity of experiences with some of the regular
suppliers. I have been pleased with Jameco and Digi-Key, but I tilt towards
Digi-Key because of their service and personal loyalty ‹ I¹ve been using
them since the early 1980¹s when I used to go to the bank as a kid to get a
money order so I could mail-in an order for parts. They¹re not the cheapest,
though. I try to look at it as a balance between saving money on the parts
themselves versus the cost of shipping resulting from ordering from multiple
suppliers because you can¹t get 100% of your needs from one guy.

Hi Chris,

Not a war. Everyone has their favorites. I have worked thru BOMs and have
gotten pretty good at having a list of parts in my Mouser account. I
always buy resistors in lots of at least 10. .1 mfd bypass capacitors come
in 30s. As far as ICs, you can look them up by their 74xxnnnn number. The
only things I get from Jameco is things that aren't findable anywhere
else. Some old ICs come from Ebay. (Disk Controller chips, 6809s, etc).

I doubt any "supplier" war has started. It is good to know a wide
list of suppliers that have a low minimum order threshold.

If I may insert my two bits:

--Unicorn Components is a very good source of IC's of many family
types.
--Jameco is, for me, a 1-2 day source of parts here in Calif.
--UTSource on eBay (and on-line), often has bargains on multiple
unit orders. Shipping times from China have improved, IMHO, over
the last several months.
--Digikey & Mouser are old standby's.

I think one of the biggest considerations is to find all the parts
you need at one source. I wish I could do this more often.
