Discussion:
[N8VEM: 19434] EPROM programmer

Hi all,

I've been trying to programme a 27C256 using the Genius GS540, but it
always errors out. I can't tell if it is hardware or software related.

I have a EPROM programmer for my Tandy Colour Computer, but that is
limited to 27128 devices.

Can someone suggest a not too expensive programmer which is KNOWN to do
27C256 (and other 27C devices)?

I have had no problems programming the SST39SF040 for my ZETA, and also
a 24C512 for the parportprop; although I still need to test this. But it
seems that any "legacy" EPROM chips won't work. My guess is that the
Genius programmer just doesn't develop the required programming voltage.

I agree with the psuedo english of the manual. I found that the user
screens were better in Windows 8.1 than Windows XP.

And absolutely no user support.

I think I'll try to find a Willem programmer; they seem to be better.

One thing I've found lacking on many 'modern' device programmers is they
use a fairly low voltage and wattage wall warts or depend on USB ports for
power and use buck regulators and capacitors for step up voltage.
Bob,
I'm glad you had better luck with the SST flash memory. I got the Genius

Hi John.
The Genius G540 has no DIP switches. I think everything is supposed to
be done in software.

Which version of Willem are you using? eBay has only a very small
selection and they are parallel port programmers. My main W8.1 box has
no parallel port, so I'd need to resort to my WinXP box.

I see you caught the meaning of the A19 comment.<br>
<br>
Sadly, my Willem is also a parallel port job, 5.0E.<br>
<br>
The negatives on the Willem are:<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 1.&nbsp; Parallel port required.&nbsp; I run it on an old P4 machine with
a ParPort, but use USB to power it.&nbsp; The wall-wart is avoidable.<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 2.&nbsp; Dip switch settings are a bit of a pain.<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 3.&nbsp; No GAL programming support.<br>
<br>
Positives for the Willem:<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 1.&nbsp; Good user GUI.&nbsp; You <u>can</u> get the DIP switches set up
okay on try 1.<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 2.&nbsp; Support for a wide variety of chips.<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 3.&nbsp; It has never destroyed a chip, even when I fouled up the
settings; e.g., the A19 jumper.<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 4.&nbsp; Manual and Help are in <u>English</u>.&nbsp; Retailer provided
e-mail support for me (regarding A19).<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 5.&nbsp; It is inexpensive.<br>
<br>
--John<br>
<br>
BTW:&nbsp; I've also used the Willem to program the 8-pin serial flash
for the Propeller.&nbsp; GUI is incorrect about chip placement, but the
board is marked properly.&nbsp; Or is it the reverse?&nbsp; It is a while
since I updated the Propeller firmware.<br>

Sorry, John. I mis-read your comment regarding A19. I thought you were
referring to the G540. My bad.

Bob,
I'm glad you had better luck with the SST flash memory. I got the
Genius to program GAL's, so the money is not wasted.
My Willem does a good job with 27Cxxx EPROM and AMD & SST flash memories.
With the larger chips, watch out for the setting of the A19 jumper on
the Willem. It is separate from the DIP switches. I've forgotten to
set it properly a couple of times.

I have had no problems programming the SST39SF040 for my ZETA, and
also a 24C512 for the parportprop; although I still need to test this.
But it seems that any "legacy" EPROM chips won't work. My guess is
that the Genius programmer just doesn't develop the required
programming voltage.
I agree with the psuedo english of the manual. I found that the user
screens were better in Windows 8.1 than Windows XP.
And absolutely no user support.
I think I'll try to find a Willem programmer; they seem to be better.

Bob,
My experience with the Genius G840 programmer has been hit-or-miss.
Flash memory (512K x 8) AMD AM29F040 are destroyed by the programmer.
Atmel GAL's ATF16V8's are erased and programmed successfully. However,
don't believe the suggested placement of the device in the ZIF socket.
It took two tries to get the placement correct. In the process, the
devices were not destroyed.
The pix that are displayed with the GUI are not accurate. The manual is
written in some semblance of English, but I cannot translate it. And
the factory and retailers have zero Customer Service.
I cannot recommend the Genius programmer.

Hi all,
I've been trying to programme a 27C256 using the Genius GS540, but it
always errors out. I can't tell if it is hardware or software related.
I have a EPROM programmer for my Tandy Colour Computer, but that is
limited to 27128 devices.
Can someone suggest a not too expensive programmer which is KNOWN to
do 27C256 (and other 27C devices)?

Hi Bob,
I have a Willem GQ-4X USB Eprom Programmer that I have successfully programmed every version of 27Cxxx device I have put into it up to and including a 27C080 8Mbit eprom. I haven't programmed a 27C512 eprom yet, but it should program just fine. Though I have not tested it yet, I too have also programmed a 24C512 serial eeprom chip. I will be programming a 29F040 flash memory chip soon for my brand new Mark IV SBC that I have been busy stuffing ICs into lately between my other many projects. See the MCUMall web page at the following link for details.
I love my GQ-4x Eprom Programmer. It has never failed me yet. Sometimes you have to figure out the correct device number to use because not all eprom numbers are in the database, but all the eproms I have tried after a bit of figuring have eventually programmed successfully. I hope you will be able to solve your eprom programming issue soon. I hope this helps. Take care my friend.

I have a g540 that I've not had any issues programming 27c256 devices, the
hardest part was finding a compatible device for some of the ones I have,
there are big gaps in some of the device lists. I also have a 'willem'

little spendy, and a data I/o 29b with unipak 2b can program lots of
devices including 3? voltage chips

Although my favorite programmers for most legacy 27xxx devices are the
various Needham's programmers, they haven't been supported for 10+ years
and can be tough to locate with all of the various "simms".

I picked up a currently made / inexpensive TL866CS USB programmer and do
like it very much. It programs 27C256's fine. The software is well done,
although the English is a bit poorly translated at times.

There are some youtube videos about the unit that go thru it nicely.

I used a parallel port Willem 5.0E for most of my projects. It works, but
it doesn't support GALs and some microcontrollers (e.g. ATmega), and also I
had to make an adapter to program some PIC microcontrollers. The DIP switch
+ several jumpers configuration is time consuming and not well documented
for some ICs. Additionally it needs an external power supply for chips with
Vpp > 5V (e.g. 27xx/27Cxx)

I found a Needham EMP-300 programmer with bunch of adapters and
configuration SIMMs. It works well for some chips, but it already had
destroyed a 28C64 and a 27C256 OTP-EPROM (a VGA BIOS ROM which I was trying
to read in the programmer).

After all this trouble I bought TL866A on the eBay. So far it works very
well, and I programmed 39SF040, 27C256, and ATmega328 using it. It also has
a function to test logic ICs (74xx, 4xxx series). I haven't tried that yet,
but it appears to be a useful feature. I like that I only need a single USB
cable to connect it to my computer. The software seems to be currently
maintained and frequently updated, it appears to support Windows 8 (I don't
think Willem or Genius support it). The software and help/documentation is
of course in Chinglish :-). There is also an open source Linux-based
programmer software project (I might try that later).
With a set of adapters, and a supposedly US-made Aries ZIF socket (instead
of the green TEXTDOL... want-to-be 3M TEXTOOL), it cost me just a bit less
than a $100... TL866CS is cheaper, but basically the same hardware, it
doesn't have ICSP connector though... There are several TL866A/TL866CS sets
sold on eBay, with different sets of adapters or without them...
