Bob,

I see you caught the meaning of the A19 comment.

Sadly, my Willem is also a parallel port job, 5.0E.

The negatives on the Willem are:
1. Parallel port required. I run it on an old P4 machine with
a ParPort, but use USB to power it. The wall-wart is avoidable.
2. Dip switch settings are a bit of a pain.
3. No GAL programming support.

Positives for the Willem:
1. Good user GUI. You can get the DIP switches set up
okay on try 1.
2. Support for a wide variety of chips.
3. It has never destroyed a chip, even when I fouled up the
settings; e.g., the A19 jumper.
4. Manual and Help are in English. Retailer provided
e-mail support for me (regarding A19).
5. It is inexpensive.

BTW: I've also used the Willem to program the 8-pin serial flash
for the Propeller. GUI is incorrect about chip placement, but the
board is marked properly. Or is it the reverse? It is a while
since I updated the Propeller firmware.
The Genius G540 has no DIP switches. I think everything is
supposed to be done in software.

Which version of Willem are you using? eBay has only a very small
selection and they are parallel port programmers. My main W8.1 box
has no parallel port, so I'd need to resort to my WinXP box.

I'm glad you had better luck with the SST flash memory. I got
the

Genius to program GAL's, so the money is not wasted.

My Willem does a good job with 27Cxxx EPROM and AMD & SST
flash memories.

With the larger chips, watch out for the setting of the A19
jumper on
the Willem. It is separate from the DIP switches. I've
forgotten to
set it properly a couple of times.

But it seems that any "legacy" EPROM chips won't work. My

I agree with the psuedo english of the manual. I found that
the user

And absolutely no user support.

I think I'll try to find a Willem programmer; they seem to be
better.

My experience with the Genius G840 programmer has been
hit-or-miss.

Flash memory (512K x 8) AMD AM29F040 are destroyed by the
programmer.

Atmel GAL's ATF16V8's are erased and programmed
successfully. However,
don't believe the suggested placement of the device in the
ZIF socket.
It took two tries to get the placement correct. In the
process, the
devices were not destroyed.

The pix that are displayed with the GUI are not accurate.
The manual is
written in some semblance of English, but I cannot translate
it. And
the factory and retailers have zero Customer Service.

I cannot recommend the Genius programmer.

I have a EPROM programmer for my Tandy Colour Computer,
